2023 Healthy Living Trend Report for The Real Fountain of Youth, from Celebrity Chef and Industry Expert Mareya Ibrahim
(Westlake Village, CA) – Life after 40 is grand. According to Visa, women over 40 outspend anyone else and will shape where the market goes based on their needs. Industry expert and trends watcher Mareya Ibrahim, predicts 2023 is the year of the woman over 40 learning to bio hack her biology to slow down the aging process by amping up the antioxidants, powering up on protein and helping their heart and hormone health with her 11th annual “8 great” healthy living trends report. Every year, the award-winning entrepreneur behind the eatCleaner® brand uncovers what’s next in America’s food, wellness and lifestyle scene. Here, the best-selling author of Eat Like You Give A Fork: The Real Dish on Eating to Thrive, shares what every health-conscious shopper should be focused on in the upcoming year, as we reach for collagen to go, and pasta that’s actually good for you (and tastes good, too).
It used to be that pasta was off the menu – especially if you want to try and lose weight. Now there’s a new wave of products designed specifically to work for people on high protein, low carb and ketogenic diets – and they won’t fall apart in the water when they’re boiled and actually taste really good and deliver real nutrition, some with added nutrient-dense vegetables like sweet potatoes and greens. Look for brands that use whey, pulses and beans for added protein. Pasta purists can twirl away again!
Products to try: P2eatSmart High Protein/Low Carb Pasta, Chickapea and Greens Gluten-free Pasta, Al Dente Carba-Nada Egg Fettuccine
So what’s the answer for a sweet tooth? Dates are nature’s candy and they’re showing up in everything from dipped, stuffed and rolled to products made with dates, like vinegar and syrup. The biggest perk? Although varieties can be described as sweet-tasting as creamy caramel or buttery toffee, dates have a low GI or glycemic index, which means they're less likely to spike your blood sugar levels, making them a safe choice for people with diabetes or just trying to manage their weight. They’re also full of fiber and potassium, which helps to boost heart health. Look for new varieties other than Medjool to make their way into the market and people’s hearts and palates, including Halawi, Khadrawi, Mazafati and Barhi. So what’s the best kinda’ date? One you can eat!
Recipes: Vanilla date shake (book); stuffed nut butter and coconut dates with chocolate drizzle; date caramel dip.
Products to try: Just Date Syrup, Acid League Medjool Date Balsamic, Off the Farm Banana Walnut Date Energy Bars
Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body and is not only associated with better bone and joint health, it helps with connective tissue elasticity and repair, keeps skin supple and hydrated, and helps hair, skin and nails grow stronger and can promote a healthy metabolism and weight management - basically a superpower. But, after the age of 35, collagen production rapidly declines. While most people are familiar with the powders that you have to mix to make palatable, the 2.0 generation of hydrolyzed collagen or collagen peptides makes it easier to take collagen on-the-go as a ‘treat’ in easy-to-take forms including gels, shots, chews and gummies - along with RTU drinks like collagen water, sparkling tea and coffee. That’s what I called a beautiful morning.
Recipes: Chai spice collagen protein truffles, Blueberry vanilla and almond collagen protein oats, Homemade collagen protein gel shots
Products to try: Zundora hydrolyzed collagen gel, Garden of Life vanilla collagen creamer, Vital Proteins collagen defense shot
Forget about popping a bunch of pills and vitamins. All-in-one meal and nutrient powders are taking over the shelves, offering whole food nutrients in an easy-to-take shake. These plant-based products often contain essential micronutrients, phytonutrients, pre and probiotics, greens, enzymes, adaptogens, superfoods and minerals – all in one neat little package - making it easy to get what you need to power that engine of yours in a measurable way. They’re not cheap but when you think about the 30 different pills you’re popping, and what you’re probably not getting into your body regularly, it makes a lot of sense…and cents.
Products to try:
SOS Whole Food Nutrition Powder, Ka’Chava Meal Replacement Shake, Garden of Life Raw Organic Meal
There’s a whole new wave of creative adult beverages that cut the sugar out altogether – and a lot of the alcohol for better health, but still keep the flavor. From beer to wine, to spirits and spritzes, you can imbibe and enjoy botanical infusions, spicy heat and a wide assortment of varietals without the buzz. Rose all day without the migraine or heart palpitations – we’ll take it.

It isn’t your run-of-the-mill variety. It’s pretty to look at, and it packs a nutritious punch. Red rice gets its color from antioxidants (10x more than brown rice) and magnesium, and can help reduce anxiety and stress, while supporting metabolic functions by regulating cholesterol levels, which helps maintain cardiovascular health. Studies indicate that obesity and inflammation trigger numerous health concerns, including premature aging, but red rice bran contains powerful proanthocyanidins and flavonoids that reduce the signs of aging inside and out and help improve vitality, stamina and mental acuity. You’ll see it used show up in your favorite rice dishes, from savory to sweet rice pudding or porridge and red rice bran in your baked goods.
Products to try: Positively Red Rice Bran, Lotus Foods Organic Red Rice, Lundberg Organic Red Jasmine Rice
Glutathione – called ‘the master antioxidant’ - affects overall health, including immune system function, brain health, and athletic performance by preventing damage to the cells and reduce oxidative stress. Kind of important when you think, a healthy cell is a healthy body! With age, natural levels of this much-needed antioxidant are reduced, so supplements are ideal for boosting levels. The key however is understanding that not all glutathione supplements are created equal. Look for topical glutathione supplements and liposomal glutathione that are more easily absorbed by the body. They say it gives you energy and helps you sleep – sounds like a winner to me!
Products to try: Auro Glutaryl, Ageless Rx Glutathione Nasal Spray, Patch MD Glutathione Plus Topical Patch
Sea vegetable to be exact. It’s not new, but the number of products using kelp will continue to skyrocket as it’s so sustainable, full of plant-based protein (which is still a hot double-digit trendsetter) and is powerful in supporting healthy thyroid function and weight loss. Look for products made with kelp in every aisle and in supplements, too, from kelp burgers to shrimp, vinegar to hot sauce, seaweed salad to noodles – and kelp strips to add to your meals. Kelp yourself.
