MORE ABOUT LIGHT THERAPY

Let there be light: The healing power of red light therapy

What if I told you there’s a completely natural way to get better skin, reduce inflammation and pain, enhance brain function, help with cardiovascular health, improve circulation, heal wounds faster, and even ease depression without a pill or lifting a finger or any negative side effects? I have one thing to say – Let there be light. By harnessing the benefits of light wavelengths, we can now treat so many. You know I’m always looking into ways to naturally help us hack our biology and enhance longevity to live our forking best lives and this week, I’m super excited to deep dive into my findings around Red Light Therapy – which is getting very buzzy these days, even though the concept has been around for a long time.

So what is light therapy?

Light therapy is the use of light to treat various ailments and conditions.  Backed by decades of research and clinical tests and studies, light therapy has helped many people around the world.  Different wavelengths of light stimulate the body and cells to produce hormones that have shown significant results in treating disorders, ailments, injuries, illnesses, and circadian rhythms.  Light therapy is used for general wellness and health, as light therapy has been directly linked to revitalization and rejuvenation of the body.

How does light therapy work?

  • There is no better source than the Sun. However, as many people are not able to enjoy the Sun for the daily dose of light needed.
  • Light therapy can be done with the use of several devices, including light boxes or a wearable device.
  • Light therapy works by stimulating areas of the body that need attention that in turn activate the release of neurotransmitters in the brain.

What are some benefits of light therapy?

  • Increasing levels of serotonin in the brain
  • Reducing stress hormones in the body
  • Decreasing inflammation
Increasing levels of dopamine in the brain
  • Exercise recovery
  • Wound healing: This finding by NASA was what first put RLT on the map, corroborated by evidence of accelerated healing of injuries in Navy SEALs.

How long does it take for the benefits to show up from light therapy?

Generally, it takes about two weeks for light therapy to have an effect. However, the benefits of light therapy can be immediate for some people.  There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, it is important to be patient and consistent with light therapy to experience its full benefits.  I have been an aficionado of Infrared Saunas for many years, which is a very effective way to purge toxins by getting to the cellular level and giving our mitochondria a nice little boost!   An infrared sauna is a type of sauna that uses light to make heat. This type of sauna is sometimes called a far-infrared sauna. "Far" describes where the infrared waves fall on the light spectrum. A regular sauna uses heat to warm the air, which in turn warms your body. An infrared sauna heats your body directly without warming the air around you so you can stay in longer and withstand a lot higher heat. Infrared helps you sweat and gives you same benefits of moderate exercise with an increased heart rate.

Many studies have looked at using infrared saunas in the treatment of long-lasting health problems and found some proof that saunas may help. Conditions studied include high blood pressure, heart failure, dementia and Alzheimer's disease, headache, type 2 diabetes, and arthritis.

When I was training for my bikini competition, this was a regular part of my weekly conditioning.  It is actually really effective in raising your resting basal metabolic rate to burn fat more efficiently, so I would use it before or after my workouts.  My sessions were about 45 minutes at 155 degrees, and I would come out not only drenched in sweat but feeling completely re-energized in a way I can’t even describe! Like my cells were dancing.

Now many people own an infrared sauna but I am not one of them, so at most I go about once a week.  But that’s when I discovered this new wave of at-home treatments. Red Light Therapy (RLT) is the safe application of red and near-infrared light that have the ability to penetrate through the skin and aid in the production of cellular energy.

This process is also sometimes referred to as photobiomodulation, biostimulation, LED light therapy or low-level laser therapy (LLLT).

Unlike sunlight, which contains UV rays that can cause skin damage, red light does not damage or burn our skin. In fact, research so far shows many skin benefits.

Red light therapy exposes the body to red light, which is absorbed by the mitochondria in the cells. This absorption of light energy triggers a complex series of events that leads to the production of adenosine triphosphate or ATP, a molecule that is responsible for producing energy in the cells. The increased production of ATP has several benefits, including:

Just a few of the benefits of Red light and Near Infrared are:

  1. Reduced inflammation
    2. Increased tissue repair
    3. Reduction of pain
    4. Increased collagen production
  2. Increased blood flow

Based on manufacturer data and clinical studies, Red light therapy:

  1. Improves Overall Mood, which can be very powerful for people with SAD or seasonal affects disorder when the weather is cold and they aren’t outside as much.
  2. Reduces Stress Levels
  3. Alleviates Pain
  4. Boosts Healing
  5. Improve Sleep Quality

What really fascinates me too is the use of RLT as an anti-aging tool.  It can work to:

  • Stimulate collagen production, which gives skin its structure, strength and elasticity.
  • Increase fibroblast production, which makes collagen. Collagen is a component of connective tissue that builds skin.
  • Increase blood circulation to the tissue.
  • Reduce inflammation in cells.

Red light therapy is an FDA-cleared treatment that can improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles, and increase collagen production. This treatment is non-invasive and can lead to younger-looking skin.

When applied to the skin, red light penetrates the tissue and is absorbed by the mitochondria. The mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cells, and they play a critical role in cell regeneration.

The photo biomodulation that occurs during red light therapy stimulates collagen production and cell turnover, which leads to younger-looking skin. Red light therapy can also help to improve skin texture, decrease pore size, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

I’ve personally been testing it out over the last week and have found it really has helped with my energy level, healing from these horrible cuts on my fingers from my mandolin slicer, and has helped my teenager in the morning embrace school a little more.  Funny enough, it’s also helped make ahem going to number 2 very effectively.  Is that TMI?

The point is, while there isn’t a ton of conclusive scientific data, there is still data and it’s seems to be very positive.  I personally feel a difference that is not just placebo, so if you’re looking for non-invasive, effective ways to live your best life, I really believe light therapy can be a powerful protocol in your biohacking arsenal – and the best part is, you can do it in the comfort of your own home.
